Dream, Beautiful Girl, Dream!

Dreaming has always been a big part of my life. I've been dreaming for as long as I can remember. I dream because it makes me happy. I don't really get to caught up in if the dream actually comes true. I also don't worry about how it will get done. Why is dreaming important? The Law of Attraction can answer that. The Law of Attraction states, what you think you get. What your mind can see will eventually materialize in life. That means we get what we f

A Little Less Conversation A Little More Action

When it come to teaching healthy habits to our children, a little less conversation and a little more action, is the name of the game. Kids learn by observing how their parents live. Better said kids learn from what we do. Not what we say. It’s less effective to tell your children we need to watch what we eat and exercise more. It’s better your child see you exercising consistently, and eating healthfully. Kids will emulate your behavior even if the

No More, Do I Look Fat?

Want to lose weight? Start by changing your thoughts and vocabulary. Many women have a ticker tape in their minds saying not skinny enough, not good enough, not pretty enough, not smart enough, etc. It feels shitty to have these negative thoughts. Even worse many women say these negative thoughts out loud further solidifying their significance. You cannot create lasting weight loss from a place of lack. One of the first steps in losing weight it changing

Jealousy Sucks

Jealousy is the main reason women put each other down. It happens in the media constantly. Junior high and high schools are hotbeds of insecure girls doing anything they can to feel better about themselves. Hence the reason “bullying” is a buzzword heard all the time. Are you that person putting others down or being mean? If so, stop now and see how much better you'll feel. Jealousy doesn't feel good. Being mean doesn't feel good either.

Give yourself the gift of indulgence. Indulgence makes life enjoyable. I see too many women denying themselves indulgence. We were not meant to endure and deprive ourselves. Maybe you grew up in a family where you saw your mom denying herself of simple pleasures. Maybe being a martyr was admired. Maybe you feel like your financial situation dictates how much indulgence you deserve. Throw that flawed thinking out quickly. Everyone deserves to indulge

Work in Progress

I call this blog, Work in Progress, because that's what I am. My weight-loss work started in college which I refer to as boot camp. In so many ways college was life changing as I’m sure it is for everyone who attends. By graduation day I would've encountered every eating disorder and self-esteem problem possible. I would dabble at having my own bouts of low self-esteem and eating disorder attempts. We’ll get to that later. My second year of college

Proof Visualization Works

This story of successful visualization dates all the way back to 2003. My last year of college, one of my marketing professors assigned us to read, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. The book suggests one write a mission statement for your life. We were assigned to do just that in any creative way we wished. I was about to close one chapter of my life and open another. I knew I was about to get my first big girl job. Most likel

Scared of Freedom with Food

You're probably afraid of what you'll eat by giving yourself full permission to eat anything you want. After all, you might not be happy with your current food choices, and you're on a diet! What's going to happen when you don't have the structure of a diet? Believe it or not, your body will crave healthy food once you've mastered eating intuitively. Learning to eat intuitively takes time especially if you've been dieting for a long time. Lifetime diete

If Momma Ain’t Happy, Ain’t Nobody Happy

I hear way too many moms complaining about their role as maid, chef, and chauffeur to their children.  When you ask a mom how they are the answer is always busy. Newsflash, everyone is busy regardless if they work, stay-at-home, have children or don’t. Busy isn't an answer. When did it become virtuous to be subservient to our kid’s schedules? Ladies, let's take the time to care for ourselves. A happy Momma is a good Momma.

A Healthier Spin on Pizza Night

My family usually orders pizza once a week. I like the night off from cooking, and we all love pizza. Here is my suggestion to make pizza night a little healthier. Pizza usually takes around an hour to arrive if you opt for delivery. Use that time to set the table and prepare some vegetables. I usually prepare cucumbers, snap peas, and baby carrots, Ranch dip if we have it, and olives. If we are starving we snack on the veggies while we wait for the pizza

Carpet Camp

My last year of college I began my first grown up job search. It was time to see what I could do with my business degree.  I registered through Chico State’s career center, made a resume and purchased my first business suit.  Dressed in our business suits, that fall, my friends and I went to the career fair held at Chico State.  Walking around the many booths with recruiters handing out information about their companies was exciting. I was finally st

Become a Keen Observer of Your Life

Learn to view your life without judgment, asking yourself why is this helpful? By observing your life, you will be able to see why you have certain habits and traits. If you find yourself observing and thinking about traits that are not serving you well, figuring out why can help you to change unhelpful habits by getting to the root of the problem. Conversely, if you are observing positive habits and traits that are serving you well, you can have an app

Hot Dog Race

Up until my early 20’s, I'd always felt less than in many ways. Not as smart, not as pretty, and not as skinny. My constant negative self-talk consumed many years of my life. Even as I lost weight my attitude about myself remained unchanged. That was until Greek week my third year of college. Greek week was a competition between sororities and fraternities. There were different activities each day, like a blood drive, talent show, etc. I happened t

One might think because I'm a Pilates instructor I have an advantage when it comes to losing weight. People tend to think I'm working out all day. Here's the deal with teaching Pilates. While you are instructing, you don’t actually do it yourself. As an instructor, you have to make time for your practice. Self-Practice is one of the keys to becoming a good instructor. Being a better teacher is great motivation to practice Pilates. Just like everyon

The Gray Area

Diets have everyone thinking and behaving in extremes. Steamed vegetables and boneless skinless chicken breast or fried chicken and biscuits. There is a large gray area between the two extremes. Healthy eating is not black and white. I love living in the gray area. The all or nothing mentality doesn't work. I prefer to balance what I eat in a 24-hour period. I'm not really that technical. Here's an example, say I eat lunch out, for dinner, I'll prepare

How Economics Can Help You Lose Weight

Economics can help you lose weight! Apply the sunk cost model to eating, especially when eating out. A sunk cost is an already incurred cost, which you can’t get back. Economists suggest not making decisions based on sunk costs (what you've already spent). Here's how you apply the sunk cost concept to eating: Don't finish your meal just because you paid for it. Fact, the money is spent regardless if you finish the meal or not. Finishing your meal t

It’s Time to Get Serious

It's time to get serious about finishing my book and getting it published. I found a great online source on how to publish a non-fiction book. I love that I have a concrete outline detailing what I need to do.  It turns out I need to write a book proposal. A book proposal is essentially a business plan; I have a business marketing degree I can do this! Step one, research competing books. I started my research online, and there are many women with simil

Eat the Middle of Your Cinnamon Roll First

Everyone knows the best part of a cinnamon roll is the delicious center, skip eating the drier outer edges and eat the center first. You will feel satisfied and eat less overall if you allow yourself to eat the best part first. You will find satisfaction sooner, causing you to eat less. Do not waste valuable stomach space on anything less than perfect. Indulge and eat the best part first; you will be happy you did. Use the cinnamon roll rule every time

Why It’s a Privilege to be Overweight

Last night as I was watching the 60 Minutes segment on hunger in South Sudan, I was struck with this thought, it is a privilege to be overweight and living in America. The impoverished people living in war-torn South Sudan are starving. The segment showed starving children lying, with their distended stomachs from starvation, in makeshift hospital beds. It is a touching segment, one that left me feeling very lucky. I also felt admiration for the doctors,

The Picture That Started It All

I spent about half my life hating myself and my body. As a child, I always felt fat. Looking at old pictures I have discovered that in fact, I was not overweight, I guess the crazy started then. In high school I was overweight, weighing around 170 pounds, wearing a size 13/14. In college, I gained the "freshman fifteen" bringing me to 185 pounds give or take. My turning point was Spring freshman year of college.  After seeing pictures taken on St. P
